Despite Aristarchus’ revolutionary heliocentric model, his ideas did not gain acceptance. Rather, the prevailing thought that dominated astronomy for much of Western history was the geocentric model.
That’s what Marcelo and I were exploring in in our op-ed and what I want to unpack a bit deeper here as a way of closing our series. For most of human history, observers of the sky assumed it eternal and unchanging.

His geocentric vision of the universe had a long-lasting and profound impact on Western scientific thought for over a millennium. Finally, Hipparchus’s astronomical endeavors helped create a method for predicting lunar and solar eclipses. By analyzing the irregularities in the Moon’s motion, he created mathematical models that could forecast the occurrence and characteristics of these celestial events.
JWST’s hunt for distant galaxies keeps turning up surprises
A fundamental difference between Newton’s cosmology and those preceding it was the Copernican principle—that the bodies on Earth obey the same physical laws as all celestial bodies. Theoretical astrophysicist David N. Spergel has described cosmology as a “historical science” because “when we look out in space, we look back in time” due to the finite nature of the speed of light. Ptolemy’s philosophy was heavily influenced by predominant Greek philosophical traditions, most notably those of Aristotle and Plato. Following in the footsteps of his Greek predecessors and their early scientific theories, Ptolemy sought to develop a comprehensive model of the natural world based on mathematical principles and empirical data.

The James Webb telescope spotted the earliest known ‘quenched’ galaxy
She found her love for astronomy in Carl Sagan’s The Pale Blue Dot and has been hooked ever since. She holds an MA in Journalism from Northeastern University and has been a contributing writer for Astronomy Magazine since 2017. Astronomers have discovered the most distant example of a galaxy in the universe that looks like our home galaxy, the Milky Way. Once you have a Ph.D. in a related field, you’re able to apply for cosmologist positions. However, some employers may prefer a candidate who has professional experience and academic credentials, which means it could benefit you to look for a post-doctorate research position or fellowship. These opportunities allow you to apply your advanced knowledge and skills in a practical environment. During this time, you also work with established professionals who can guide your development and potentially serve as recommenders for any full-time cosmology positions to which you apply.
In early Buddhist traditions, Saṃsāra cosmology consisted of five realms through which wheel of existence recycled. This included hells , hungry ghosts , animals , humans , and gods .
